Final Fantasy IV NDS

Final Fantasy IV retains the original Active Time Battle System from the initial Super Nintendo release. Similar to the previous remake of Final Fantasy III on the Nintendo DS, the control of stylus is limited and optional in order to retain the same control input while allowing other players to use the Nintendo DS's unique touch control scheme. However, the remake features a new ability system known as the Augment System, or the Decant Ability System in the Japanese version. The system allows for certain character-only abilities to be transferred to other characters who did not have them in the original and previous releases of Final Fantasy IV. Up to three abilities can come from temporary party members. When leaving the party, temporary characters will yield abilities of their own, the number of which is dependent on how many abilities they were given. There are also other abilities; some scattered around the world, and some that become available after certain story events.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift

Grimoire of the Rift uses an isometric turn-based tactics battle system. However, Square Enix further developed the game's grid-based system and increased the number of character jobs. Some enemies also appear in larger sizes, taking up multiple squares on the grid. The world map has also developed, with the introduction of "area maps". The area maps feature multiple battle locations and a town, which work similar to its predecessor. Enemy clans also travel the world map. The game differs from previous Final Fantasy Tactics games because one chooses specific missions from a screen. Some missions are central to the story and can be replayed until successfully completed. There are over 300 other missions in the game that may be replayed again and again in order to level up the player's team. There are also random battles against creatures that occur on the map, which one can choose to fight.

Final Fantasy III NDS

ff, Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS features overhauls to the job system, including the rebalancing of the classes, the addition of new abilities, a new "Freelancer" class that replaces "Onion Knight" as the default job at the beginning of the game (Onion Knight is retained as a secret class), new events, a new crystal and dungeon, and the removal of capacity points. Unlike the original Famicom version, most of the jobs remain useful for the entire game. The ultimate jobs – the Ninja and the Sage – and some of the lesser-used jobs like the Geomancer were redesigned to have the same level of abilities as the Warrior. Also added was the Special job items you get if you get 99 in a certain job. In place of capacity points, each character incurs a small penalty for switching jobs. This penalty decreases the character's statistics for the next 0 to 10 battles. This period is called a "Job Transition Phase" and its length is based on "job compatibility" and the difference in job levels between the new job and old job. The transition phase length is determined by the sum of the distance between the two jobs on both axes of a graph (every class can be graphed chaotic to lawful versus magical to physical), minus the job level of the new job divided by 10.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - Ring of Fates

Most of the gameplay takes place on the top screen. The touch screen shows inventory and status as well as stylus access for different weapon attacks. There are also special race-specific attacks in the game. By pressing the right trigger button, the screens will swap allowing enemies to be attacked by certain races just by touching them with the stylus. If done correctly, chained attacks can be performed. As in most RPGs, Ring of Fates features a level-up system, where defeating monsters earns experience points, and sufficient experience points raises a character's level, along with their stats. Ring of Fates features five stats: Hit points, Special points (used for special attacks), Power, Defense and Magic. Experience is shared between party members, with members of lower or higher level getting more or less experience. All races learn new skills after gaining a certain amount of experience, such as charged attacks.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

After completing a prologue sequence, the player starts the game with an airship, named after their clan (with a default name of Galbana, or Beiluge in the Japanese version). The airship is used as a base where the player can check on their current mission and view other tasks, customize equipment in the synthesis shop, or travel between the four islands of Lemurés. The airship's interior can also be customized by the player. Revenant Wings is a real-time strategy game, but with elements reminiscent of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Advance. It can be played entirely with the Nintendo DS stylus. Like in Final Fantasy XII, battles initiate once the party comes in contact with the enemy, and the characters can attack automatically. The player is given the option to give commands to the characters by tapping on them with the stylus. Possible commands include changing the character's target, setting their gambit, or using various abilities.
